Changyu Cabernet——China's first bottle of dry red wine
China's first bottle of dry red wine
Changyu Cabernet, born in 1931, was the first bottle of dry red wine in China.
In 2021, Changyu Cabernet celebrated its 90th anniversary. After years of development, Changyu Cabernet has been sold to over 30 countries worldwide and has entered over 5000 stores in Europe, becoming a highly acclaimed Chinese wine brand internationally. For over 90 years, it has been constantly brewing the charm of time!
The earliest brand history of dry red in China
The origin of the name "Cabernet"
In 1931, the third winemaker of Changyu, Italian Baptiste Dodge, used the Cabernet Sauvignon grape as the main ingredient to produce China's first bottle of dry red wine. Mr. Xu Wangzhi, who was then the general manager, took inspiration from the business philosophy advocated by Zhang Bishi, the founder of Changyu, which is the integration of China and the West and the integration of the sea and rivers, and named it "Cabernet".
The earliest national brand to achieve international quality
In the article "Analysis of Changyu Wine and Comparison of Wines from Various Countries" published in the Journal of Brewing on April 7, 1939, a comparison of analysis indicators between Changyu Cabernet dry red wine and European country wines was published. The indicators fully met the standards of high-quality dry red wine, marking the beginning of the first domestic wine to align with international quality.
Continuously improving exclusive process formula
In the 1980s, under the leadership of China's first generation female winemaker Chen Puxian, Chang Yu established the Cabernet Dry Red Center Laboratory, which improved the Cabernet process formula on the basis of inheritance, ending the history of China's high-end wine lacking core technology for many years.
World leading brewing equipment
In 1998, Changyu built a 30000 ton raw wine fermentation center, mainly used for the fermentation and storage of Changyu Cabernet raw wine. In 2007, a Cabernet production center with an annual production capacity of 30000 tons and an internationally advanced filling production line capable of filling 15000 bottles per hour were built.

Wine making grape Cabernet Sauvignon
Changyu Company was founded in 1892. As early as its establishment, 124 wine grape varieties were introduced from Europe. After years of grafting and improvement, a high-quality and unique regional wine grape named Snake Dragon Ball was bred.
The world's largest snake dragon ball
Grape planting base
Changyu Company has the world's largest snake dragon pearl grape planting base in Yantai, accounting for 80% of the total snake dragon pearl production in Yantai and 70% of the total national production.
The snake dragon pearl grape, which is unique only in China, has undergone long-term natural and artificial breeding and has become an excellent wine grape variety that adapts to the local customs of Yantai, performs well, and is widely accepted and recognized.
The allocation process of modern advanced technology
In the 1990s, Chang Yu used modern biotechnology to select four excellent new strains from snake dragon pearl varieties, and determined the characteristic flavor components of Chang Yu Cabernet through modern analysis techniques such as liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, and mass spectrometry.
On the basis of the process formula, the winemaker needs to age the new Snake Dragon Ball wine in oak barrels with different barbecue methods and degrees each year according to the taste changes of the new wine. Then, it enters the blending process and undergoes countless adjustments to determine the subtle changes in the blending ratio of the year, making it more harmonious in taste and brighter in color.
International Integrated Quality Grading System for Wine
In 2006, Changyu Cabernet took the lead in implementing a comprehensive wine quality grading system that was in line with international standards.
Specific indicators were determined for the six aspects that affect the quality of wine, including vineyards, grape ingredients, brewing techniques, oak barrel aging, blending, and bottle storage. Through layer by layer optimization, Changyu Cabernet was ultimately divided into four levels.
Changyu Cabernet is ranked in descending order of product grade:
Preferred level, Special level, Treasure level, Master level.

DB pointed out in a report titled "BATTLE of the Giants" that the results of this competition are of great significance. On the one hand, it proves that China's Changyu can produce high-quality wine on a large scale. On the other hand, for many Chinese people, the first bottle of wine they drink is likely to be Changyu Cabernet. This means that Changyu Cabernet plays an extremely important role in introducing more new wine consumers.
Master level Changyu Cabernet
The master Changyu Cabernet has a pomegranate red color, accompanied by a rich aroma of black fruits such as cherries, plums, and blackberries. The fruity aroma is perfectly combined with the chocolate, smoky, cedar, tobacco, and other aromas brought by oak barrel aging. The tannins are tight and soft, with a long and mellow aftertaste, a more mellow and balanced flavor, and a typical aging characteristic of the variety.

"Beautiful color, with aromas of red berries and leather. Tannins are strong, but silky and concentrated. Full of ripe and fresh fruit, spicy balance acidity. Long and powerful aftertaste, good impression. I didn't think China had such good wine. The impact of the oak barrel is not too strong, and it is suitable."
